Record-Breaking $65.75 Million Sale of Luxury Kahala Estate Sets New Benchmark in Hawaii

A prestigious beachfront estate in Kahala has set a new record for residential property sales in Hawaii, selling for an impressive $65.75 million. The transaction, which closed on Friday, marks the highest recorded sale for a residential property in the state.
A Luxurious Beachfront Retreat
Known as Hale Hanohano, or the "House of Honor," this exceptional estate spans 1.5 acres across two parcels, offering 213 feet of stunning ocean frontage. Comprising three distinct homes, the property was meticulously designed to accommodate multigenerational living. The main residence, along with an additional home for adult children and a guest house, boasts a total living space of 11,870 square feet. Built in 2018 by architect Kristan Eiserloh, the estate features an Olympic-sized lap pool and direct access to the pristine sands of Kahala Beach.
A Noteworthy Sale
This landmark sale surpasses Hawaii’s previous residential sales record of $46.1 million, which was set by an estate on Kauai’s North Shore. Representing the seller in this transaction were Derek Kamm of Coldwell Banker Island Properties and Noel Shaw of Hawaii Life, while Anne Hogan Perry of Compass represented the buyer, who remains undisclosed.
A Legacy of Luxury
The former owner, Susan Ocampo, along with her late husband, John Ocampo, gradually assembled the estate by acquiring two adjacent properties—one at 4807 Kainapau Place in December 2013 and another at 4823 Kahala Avenue in April 2014—for a combined total of $22.2 million. These parcels were part of a larger portfolio of Kahala homes previously owned by Alexander & Baldwin, which had purchased them from the late Japanese billionaire Genshiro Kawamoto.
Historically, the property at Kainapau Place was once owned by renowned Hawaii developer Chris Hemmeter, known for his work on the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach and Hilton Waikoloa. The original mansion was demolished in 2009 by Kawamoto, who had envisioned creating a Japanese tea garden before Alexander & Baldwin acquired the estate.
Oahu’s Luxury Market on the Rise
Prior to this sale, the highest-priced residential transaction on Oahu was a $27.5 million penthouse at Park Lane Ala Moana. The previous record for a single-family home stood at $26 million for a residence at 123 Kailuana Loop in Kailua. This latest transaction reinforces the continued appeal and strength of Hawaii’s luxury real estate market, setting a new standard for high-end waterfront properties.
As the demand for premier oceanfront estates continues to rise, Kahala remains a sought-after location for discerning buyers seeking unparalleled luxury and exclusivity in Hawaii.
